As a new member of Dorson’s Board of Directors, Nathaniel Reichel, brings a unique background with early experience working in his family's business. He worked a few years as the Vice President for a tech startup and is currently designing tech products for the City University of New York (CUNY). Nate recently led our Dorson Scholars in their capstone end-of-year project, the Dorson Design Challenge. For this challenge, Nate felt it was important for Scholars to practice self-reflection and take ownership of their academic lives, exercise autonomy and their brilliance by creating real products for Dorson, and to nurture the most efficient learning environment for our scholars.
Let's get to know him better by reading through his values, beliefs, likes and dislikes.
What is your personal philosophy?
I am constantly striving for the best version of myself. The following two quotes depict two philosophies that fundamentally drive me:
The Essence of Destiny
"Watch your thoughts: for They become your words.
Choose your words: for They become your actions.
Understand your actions: for They become your habits.
Study your habits: for They become your character.
Develop your character: for It becomes your destiny"
To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded. - Ralph Waldo Emerson
What three traits define you?
Who/What is your biggest inspiration?
Andrew Yang: Founder of VFA, 2020 Democratic nominee for President of the United States of America, Founder of Humanity Forward.
What is your favorite movie/song/book?
One thing to know about me is that I can never choose favorites; they constantly change because I can never only choose one. Recently, my favorite movie is 1917, my favorite books are White Privilege by Robin Diangelo and the Order of Time by Carlo Rovelli, and my favorite album is “- Ugh, those feels again” by Snoh Aalegra.
What is your favorite word?
What’s your favorite slang? New or Old.
Mother of Pearl!
What’s your favorite breakfast food?
Egg sandwich or over rice and berries (blueberries, blackberries, strawberries).
If you were a crayon, what color would you be?
Sky’s the limit blue.
Who is your favorite superhero?
Never was a big superhero follower but it would have to be Iron Man or Thor.
If you could pick up a new skill in an instant, what would it be?
Organizing my non-work calendar.
What do you do in your spare time?
I don’t have much spare time these days, but I love spending time with friends and family as well as listening to music, learning, and reflecting while alone.
What’s your favorite place you’ve ever visited?
In terms of pure natural beauty, New Zealand and Hawaii but Cape May, NJ is my favorite place because it is the beach we would go to every summer with family.
If you could choose a superpower, what would you choose? Why?
Bring World Peace. A mindset of scarcity has unfortunately overcome even more of us in this post COVID-19 era that I want more than ever to give everyone the ability to recognize and fulfill their brilliance and have basic needs met so that we can better one another rather than tear each other down.
